🏫 Class 8 English Grammar – Determiners


📘 What is a Determiner?

A determiner is a word used before a noun to limit or define its meaning.
It tells us which one, whose, how many, or how much.
Determiners make the noun specific.

Example:

  • The book is on the table.

  • Some boys are absent today.


🔹 Types of Determiners

1) Articles

  • Definite Article: the → used for specific nouns

    • Example: The sun rises in the east.

  • Indefinite Articles: a, an → used for non-specific nouns

    • Example: A boy is playing. / An apple a day keeps the doctor away.


2) Demonstratives

  • this, that, these, those → show which item or items are referred to.

    • This book is mine.

    • Those houses are new.


3) Possessive Determiners

  • my, your, his, her, its, our, their → show ownership or possession.

    • My bag is red.

    • Their car is new.


4) Quantifiers

  • Indicate quantity or amount.

  • Examples: some, any, much, many, few, little, several, enough, plenty of

    • I have some friends.

    • There isn’t much sugar left.

    • Few people attended the meeting.


5) Numbers

  • Cardinal Numbers: one, two, three, etc.

  • Ordinal Numbers: first, second, third, etc.

    • Example: Two cats are sleeping.

    • Example: He won the first prize.


6) Distributives

  • each, every, either, neither → refer to members of a group separately or individually.

    • Each student received a prize.

    • Neither answer is correct.


7) Interrogative Determiners

  • which, what, whose → used before a noun to ask questions.

    • Which book do you want?

    • Whose bag is this?


⭐ Key Rules

  1. A determiner always comes before a noun or before adjectives + noun.

    • The red car is mine.

  2. Determiners cannot be used alone without a noun.

    • Some are missing. ✅ Some people are missing.

  3. Do not use two main determiners together.

    • The my car

    • My car
